1) Getting Started & Programs
1. What age can my child start martial arts?
Our youngest students begin at age 3 in our ATA Tigers program. We also have specific beginner-level classes, so no prior experience is needed at any age — children, teens, or adults can start anytime.
2. Do you offer family memberships or discounts?
Yes! Family memberships start at 3 members and must be from the same household. Families can often train on the same night in back-to-back classes, making it easy to fit training into your week.
3. What style of martial arts do you teach?
Horizon ATA teaches Songahm Taekwondo within the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) system — balancing traditional technique with modern life-skill development.
4. How are classes grouped?
Classes are organized by both age (program) and skill level (belt/rank). ATA Tigers & Karate Kids earn 6 stripes per belt; Teens & Adults earn 3 stripes.
5. What should I wear to my first class?
For your first class, wear a comfortable t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants. After enrollment, wear the Horizon uniform or Horizon shirt with uniform pants. No shoes are worn on the mats.
6. How many classes should I attend each week?
We recommend two classes per week for steady progress. Once students begin sparring (at the intermediate level), they may attend two traditional classes + one sparring class weekly. Please check in each time you arrive.
7. What happens if I miss a class?
Make it up by attending another class in your program that week, as space allows. Our flexible schedule makes it simple to stay on track.
8. How do students join the Leadership Program?
Leadership isn’t just about rank — it’s about attitude, consistency, and the desire to help others. Standout students are always welcome. Leadership is open to ages 7+ and builds communication, teamwork, and confidence.
9. Can we attend classes at both Westlake and Sheffield Village?
Not at this time. Memberships are currently location-specific. We are actively designing a multi-location membership for the future.
10. Can siblings train together?
It depends on age and skill level. We recommend each student train in the appropriate program for the best learning environment, but siblings often train on the same night in back-to-back sessions.
2) Membership, Billing & Attendance
1. How does billing work after the introductory program?
After your intro month, your membership continues with recurring monthly billing — think of it like a Netflix-style subscription. An automated email goes out before billing each month.
2. Are memberships long-term contracts?
No — memberships are month-to-month. To stop training, complete our cancellation form. We don’t offer pauses; when a membership is canceled, it ends fully. Returning students continue at their same belt/rank but must re-enroll at the current membership options and rate that we are offering (former membership rate and pricing would be lost).
3. How do I check in for class?
Use the front-desk tablet. Search your name and tap to confirm. Check in for every class you attend — even if you’re doing multiple classes in the same day.
4. What if we move to another area?
You can continue at another ATA-licensed school without losing rank. Curriculum may vary slightly. Please cancel your membership at your current location before transitioning.
5. Can I make up classes or adjust my schedule?
Yes. You can attend extra classes before or after a missed week if you’re able — we fully support a flexible schedule.
6. Do I need to pre-schedule weekly classes?
No. Once enrolled, just arrive at your preferred time for your program and check in upon arrival.
7. How does Horizon ATA handle weather closures or emergencies?
Decisions are made at least 2 hours before class time and announced across all major channels (text, email, social).
3) Training, Progression & Curriculum
1. How often are belt tests or graduations?
Students earn stripes for attendance, effort, and skills. Once the final stripe is earned, they’re eligible to test. Test cycles typically run every 8–10 weeks, pending instructor approval.
2. When do students start sparring, board breaking, and weapons?
At the intermediate level (Camo Belt). Approved gear is required and must be purchased through Horizon ATA per our insurance.
3. Do I need to purchase gear and from where?
Yes. Sparring gear and relevant equipment must be purchased through Horizon ATA for safety and insurance compliance.
4. What is the Leadership Program?
Entry-level instructor training and competition preparation. You’ll often see Legacy/Leadership students assisting in class as role models.
5. How long does it take to earn a Black Belt?
Typically 3–5 years of consistent training, depending on effort, attendance, and skill mastery. It’s about progress, not perfection.
6. What is the Legacy Program?
Invite-only instructor-training track for advanced students who exemplify leadership and character.
7. Do you teach self-defense classes?
Yes. Self-defense is included as an additional class within the Adult Membership, or available as a separate membership for teens/adults.
8. What are “Life Skills” and how are they taught?
We highlight one of eight revolving Life Skills each week (e.g., Discipline, Respect, Confidence, Perseverance) — reinforced in class, at school, and at home.
9. Do students have access to online training resources?
Yes — members can use our online training videos and resources to practice forms, techniques, and life skills at home.
10. Do students participate in community events or demonstrations?
Yes — many Legacy and Leadership students join us at public/community events for demos and outreach.
11. Can martial arts help with focus, behavior, or confidence?
Absolutely. Our structured, positive classes build focus, discipline, and self-control. Parents often see improvements in school performance and confidence within a few months. See our reviews.
12. What if my child feels nervous or shy at first?
Totally normal! We’ll ease them in with positive coaching. If needed, we can schedule a private mini-lesson to build confidence before group class.
13. Is there a digital way to track attendance/stripes?
Yes — our check-in system tracks attendance and stripe progress. Families also receive emails with testing reminders and updates.
4) Uniforms, Gear & Testing Day
1. Do you have a uniform or dress code?
Horizon shirts may be worn on training days. For testing and tournaments, students must wear the traditional white uniform top. Keep uniforms clean and complete.
2. What happens on testing day?
Testing is a family event with added seating and time for photos. Students perform forms, skills, and (when applicable) board breaks.
3. What if we miss testing?
Make-up testing can be arranged in the week before or the week after testing, with prior approval from your instructor.
4. Are testing or equipment fees included in membership?
Testing is included. Gear and training equipment (e.g., sparring gear, weapons) are not included and may be required as students advance.

Two classes/week recommended; once sparring starts, add one weekly sparring class.
